Understanding the irrefutable importance of a role model is perhaps critical to understand their influence on the development of young adults. In today's technological age, where information regarding any and all contexts is available easily to the youth, a role model acts as a lightning rod - expounding moral values, positive reinforcement in times of uncertainty and setting inspiring examples.

To a young psyche, a source of inspiration can be close to home and heart. For me, it was my mother, who's care and loving attitude was something I would emulate. Through pop culture, I was mesmerized by Madhuri Dixit and her impeccable dancing, which further inspired me to learn dance professionally over the course of the decades. Bollywood and Cricket, India's two lifelines didn't leave a sportsman out of my list of role models. MS Dhoni's story of determination combined with his historic contribution to Indian cricket was nothing short of awe-inspiring. My formative years were spent idolizing real people with real hurdles accomplishing extraordinary things.

When it comes to business however, the game has changed. Seniority is not the only key player that determines the next role model. Attributes such as decisiveness, entrepreneurial drive, conduct, and leadership are some qualities which are revered across the board. From the get-go, I have admired Jeff Bezos for his entrepreneurial acumen. Formed under the "regret minimization framework" or what he calls, 'efforts to fend off any regrets for not participating sooner in the Internet business boom', Bezoz left his Wall Street firm to establish Amazon from his garage. The meteoric rise of the Amazon Empire from that point has been inspiring to say the least.

For some, a role model can be an influencer on Instagram who now commands the loyalty and following of millions through the sheer messages he or she sends out. For many, it could be a school teacher who transports them from the confines of their classroom to the trenches in World War 2 France, making them understand the significance of the deadliest battle in human history like no book could have done. Essentially, the quality that is most looked for in a role model is based on meritocracy - of service, of accomplishment or even of conduct.

In the workplace, leadership roles have the largest impact and potential to be seen as role models. It is important for workplace morale and for a semblance of team spirit for this role model to be motivational, decisive and inspirational. Ever since I stepped into motherhood, I really look up to Marissa Meyer and Indira Nooyi as fierce business women who maintain work-life balance and continue excelling in their respective careers.

To all those who come and read my blogs in search of guidance and clarity for their careers, I would encourage you to make role models who inspire you to take the leap and forge ahead. Find out what draws you toward them and hone those skills you admire. Always remember however that one should emulate, but not copy. We all have our journies marked out for us - we must learn to walk on them by ourselves to then become a role model for a different generation.
